MODERN LAKE HOME

This warm, modern lake home is a living sculpture situated on a beautiful, wooded lot. Strong, horizontal roof forms of wood and bronze appear to float as they reach. Well-known philanthropists and art collectors, this couple approached Charles R. Stinson Architects with the desire to create a classically modern, multi-generational family home with a multitude of sustainable-design features. A structure as “simple and elegant as an Armani suit” was requested by her. He wanted a home that was practical, useful, and not overstated. In response, Stinson composed a home of timeless simplicity out of square volumes free of ornamentation. “This composition is a collection of vertical and horizontal forms which are articulated enough to feel separate as the entire assemblage wraps around the site like a modern sculpture,” says Stinson.

“They’re a private couple on a rather public piece of property, so we created a sense of privacy and seclusion around the house,” Stinson explains. “But when you’re inside, the house has a marvelous sense of transparency and is open to the outdoors. We wanted them to feel free and connected to the site when they’re home, so it’s comfortable for them and their friends and family.”
